New Japanese Production of The Scarlet Pimpernel to Open This Month
(2 Oct 2016)
Gabriel Barre (Camille Claudel) will direct a new production of The Scarlet Pimpernel in Japan at Umeda Arts Theatre. The show, with choreography by Yurika Minato, will run from October 19 - November 29 in both Tokyo and Osaka. We caught up with Barre who had the following comments about the new production:
For more information (in Japanese), please visit the Umeda Arts Theatre.
"We are deep in rehearsal here in Tokyo for the production and it is going really well! I truly love Tokyo and working here. The actors are terrific and the work ethic and passion is like no where else I have seen. We are creating an exciting, kinetic and beautiful physical production of the show featuring new designs by a top notch creative team here in Japan and I love working with all of them too. The show will be colorful, funny and vibrant but will also mine the dark and serious side of what is happening in France in the story, and will bring out the high stakes drama that, along with Nan's terrific book and lyrics, keep the tensions at a boiling point!
We boast a terrific cast including Kanji Ishimaru as Percy Blakeney, Kei Aran as Marguerite St. Just, and Kazutaka Ishii as Chauvelin! They are terrific for the roles and are bringing great charisma, heart and talent to the production. Kei, known as Toko, will especially delight audiences as she played the male lead, Percy, in the Takarazuka production of The Scarlet Pimpernel! In ours, the premiere of the show with both genders in the cast, she will be playing a woman of course, but will have moments that the audience will be gleefully reminded of her bravura when she played the male hero! I love working with each and every one of these terrific and creative actors....The fights created by, Hiroshi Atsumi, will be astounding and action filled, and the choreography by Yurika Minato is both exciting and beautiful!
The preparations here, and the support overall, is fantastic and the run of the show is almost completely sold out already, weeks before we open - so that is always nice."
